Hertfordshire Society for the Blind

The Hertfordshire Society for the Blind was formed in 1915 to assist soldiers returning from the front who were blinded by gas. The help given (a bag of coal at Christmas) Since those early days the society now helps visually impaired people within the county in a number of ways.

These include:

  • Home Visits by staff and trained volunteers
  • A Hospital Information Service (manned by HSB staff and volunteers) located in eye clinics to support newly visually impaired people from the point of serious sight loss being diagnosed
  • A central and local Sight Information Points where equipment and gadgets to assist daily living tasks can be demonstrated
  • Information for visually impaired people, their relatives and helpers through a help/advice line
  • A regular Newsletter produced in clear print, Braille, e-mail and on tape
  • Support to local social clubs across the county and for a purpose-built Social Centre
